One of my all time favourite movies since the first time I watched it has been Ghost World. It’s a fabulous film staring Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson with Steve Busccemi. The screen play was by the author of the graphic novel Daniel Clowes. Ever since I watched it I’ve wanted to read the graphic novel and didn’t get the chance until this year when I found a copy in The Book Vault.
Once I finally got my hands on this amazing work of art I was in love and I am currently on the hunt for more of Clowes’ work. The humor is bitting in both the film and novel version of Ghost World. If you haven’t had the chance to read or watch Ghost World you are really missing out on something great.
I don’t know of any other film that has captured a novel as well as Ghost World, and I know much of that has to do with the fact that Daniel Clowes did the writing for both. The only other film that has been able to capture the essence of a film as well as this one is Juno.
I’d be interested to hear from those of you that have experienced the book and or film version of Ghost World. Did you enjoy your experience or not?
I love both the movie and the book. I like how even though the details of the stories are different, they both have the same mood. You’re making me want to read/watch it again.
Haven’t read the book, but the movie is on my netflix queue… can’t remember where I first heard about it. After seeing the preview, though, I think I need to move it up higher on the list.
I’ve seen Ghost World! I love Buscemi – this flick had such an eeriness, a quirky sensitivity. Loved it and I obviously didn’t do much research (oh, it’s based on a book? huh.) and now I need to get it to read AND also the film to watch again. Where’s ol’ Steve been these days? he was in so many hot fllms there for a while and it seems he has disappeared off my radar.
One of my favorite movies, too! I had forgotten about it…thanks for the reminder!
Nymeth: I agree, the mood of the novel was captured very well in the movie, I think that had a lot to do with the fact that Clowes was involved with the writing of the film.
Kim L: I hope you’re not disappointed. I really loved both the novel and the movie. I saw the movie first so it’s got a special place in my heart!
Care: Buscemi is fantastic isn’t he? If you’re looking for him I happened to watch 30 Rock last week and there he was. I don’t usually watch the show but I happened to stumble upon it. It’s a great show and worth checking out.
Forgetful Librarian: Watch it again, and again, and again. Great film!!
i love the book and the movie. they are so different though. i kinda like the book better. and thas not how i roll, i dont always think that the books are better than the movies i ust really think that about ghost world.
Today I came across the book and loved it! I saw the film a few yeras ago and liked it, but I don’t remember that much, so I’m gonna re-watch it.
